When succulents are stressed, many will change colour as a result of this stress.
Sometimes the change in colour is found across the whole plant – a succulent will change to a red, pink, brown, or even purple shade after being deprived of water for long enough, or being in sunlight that’s strong enough to stress the plant.
Stress colours typically make succulents look remarkably attractive, but while there’s something incredibly lovely about a uniquely coloured succulent that’s stressed all over, there’s something even more magical about colour patterns that appear due to a succulent being stressed.
One of these patterns? Turning red at the tips. There are actually a large number of succulents that turn red at the tips when they’re stressed. These succulents range from common to uncommon, and are from many genera. A number of echeverias, crassulas, sedums, and aeoniums, as well as all sort sorts of other succulents go red at the tips when they’re in a state of stress.
The fact that they do this when they’re stressed means they may not have these gorgeous colours if they’re too comfortable, like when they’re sitting inside for too long, adequately watered and without being exposed to sunlight that’s incredibly bright.
Since succulents that turn red at the tips do so only when they’re stressed, this also means there’s a good chance you might see the same succulent – one in a stressed out state and one that’s not at all stressed – and believe it to be a different plant altogether.
This is why it can be a good idea to pay attention to the names of your favourite succulents with red tips, as that way you can spot them in stores even if you don’t see the stressed tips in the plant nurseries or garden centers that you love.
I’ve done my best to compile a list of as many different succulents as I could that go red at the tips when they’re stressed, but I’m sure I’ve left out a number. Please take a moment to drop a comment below with the names of any others you can recall that I’ve left out! I’d like this to be as comprehensive a list as possible.
