Underplanting Yuccas With Succulent Cuttings in My Flower Bed

Long ago, we replaced the orange trees in our back yard (we had six of them!!) with yucca cuttings I found on the side of the road because someone had pruned their own trees.

A few months back, the yuccas were rooted well enough and I had enough plant material that I became confident enough to take the gravel out from beneath the flower beds to replace them with succulent cuttings. This is the current result.

This technique is ever-so-simple to reproduce if you have the right environment to grow succulents.

All you have to do is make sure it won’t rain for a few days, wait til the weather is cool enough to not burn your succulents to a crisp (or provide shade with some shade barrier cloth for plants) and you’re good to go.

Just wait 3-4 days before you start watering, then water as usual. And the more plants you mix and match, the better, in my opinion.

Though you absolutely could plop in plants based thematically, like choose a colour pallet.

I love me my purples, especially when it comes to succulents, and I think purple and green would be a very good mix.

But I’ll be honest – I cant help myself, because I love the wow factor that a huge amount of variety of succulents gives.

Really digging my Aeonium Sunburst the most, honestly…

I should be chopping off her head so I can get some more babies forming on the stem, but I don’t have the heart to do it quite yet, because I’m just enjoying her how she is and where she is so stinkin’ much!

Hopefully she’ll put out a second head on her own that I can take, but my guess is I’ll eventually have to sacrifice her.

Too bad! But it will need to be done eventually so I can have more of her all around my garden!
